Called to Serve

Called to Serve is a program designed by the Archdiocese of Detroit to guide and empower young people to model safe and nurturing behavior in their jobs, service, and volunteer roles within their schools, parishes and the greater community. It helps teens set boundaries in relationships with younger children, adults, and their peers. These are skills for a lifetime!

Called to Serve is an interactive workshop that uses ice breakers, small group discussion, video segments, and problem solving to deal with a sensitive subject. Each workshop lasts three hours and teens must attend the full workshop to be certified. Facilitators have been trained and certified through the Office for Safe Environments.

The Archdiocese of Detroit requires Called to Serve for all high school age teens whose volunteer activies involve children or the vulnerable, who are employed by parishes/schools, or who are enrolled in Catholic high schools.

In addition St. Mary’s parish requires Called to Serve for our high school age volunteers who participate in the following:

catechists or aides in Religious Ed or vacation bible school

music ministry—adult, Honors, ensemble, bells, or cantor

altar servers

Eucharistic ministers

lectors

ushers

festival volunteers

volunteers in our school: tutors, coaches, assistants, clubs, etc.

service project or mission trip volunteers

junior high mentors

custodial or maintenance volunteers

How to Locate a Workshop:

Workshops are scheduled across the diocese throughout the year. For a complete schedule of upcoming workshops visit www.aodonline.org and follow the link “Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal”.

Registration is through the hosting parish. There is NO ONLINE REGISTRATION for Called to Serve; you must contact the hosting parish to register. Permission slips are required to participate and are due upon entry. Permission slips are generic and you may download one here:
